when “clean eating” backfires: breaking diet rules to heal faster
Let's get real about gut healing diet "rules".
Whether it's Whole 30, Candida diet or Low FODMAP, one of the biggest reasons these diets and programs don't work for most people is that they're based on a set of rules or prescriptions that are super restrictive and not sustainable!
(and then you beat yourself up for "falling off the wagon!)
But this can be hard to wrap your head around when you've done many diets in your life and you come to the realization that it only works if you're "on track" and sticking to it 100%.
But this approach often backfires because:
All or nothing mentality breeds shame and guilt when you "fall off the wagon", and that creates a vicious cycle of "eating clean" and " indulging/cheat days", which is not healthy for your body or your mind.
Everyone's body is different
Maybe for Karen, eating clean 100% of the time and taking a million supplements works, but maybe it won't for you!
That's because your body is unique and has it's own needs.
So using dietary rules" as guidelines and then asking your body each day, "What do I need today?" "Does my body want this meal, or does it want something else?" will be such a huge game changer, I guarantee it!
Same goes for workouts or anything else in your life.
Say you've planned a HIIT workout or an intense hot yoga class for tonight, but you didn't sleep last night and work has been insane all week. Odds are, your body can't handle that right now.
Check in with yourself, would a walk feel better? Or maybe you just need a night to crash? That's ok!
See, if you're like most people I work with, you are probably pretty burnt out.
(hello mood swings, constant cravings, headaches and chronic fatigue that coffee doesn't even touch!)
When you're burnt out, if you push your body to do anything extreme, whether it's dieting or working out, it will not be happy with you.
It will backfire and make you feel worse.
(believe me, I've been there!)

So how do you heal faster?
Ditch the crazy gut healing diet rules and instead, do what you can to eat healthy, but cut yourself a break!
You'll be surprised to find you have more energy, better mood and just feel better about yourself overall.
And THAT'S how you really heal. ;)
This is why, with my clients, instead of hard and fast rules, I give them general GUIDELINES.
General healthy eating guidelines that support gut healing include:
home cooked meals more often
increase fruit and veggie intake (1/2 your plate)
minimize sugar, but allow yourself one treat per day
ditch diets and calorie counting and listen to your body’s hunger cues
don’t cut carbs - you need them for energy, just make healthy carb choices like quinoa, sweet potatoes or brown rice, fruit
increase protein intake (to manage cravings, boost mood and metabolism!)
eat more liver loving foods like brassica veggies (broccoli, cabbage, kale), beets, lemon, bitter veggies, turmeric and curry and fresh herbs
My goal is to simplify healthy eating, because it needs to be sustainable long term and you need to be able to live your life! 🍪
