2 must-do mindset shifts for gut healing
Frustrated that no matter how clean you eat, or how many probiotics and vitamins you take, you STILL feel like crap?
There's a missing link! (don't blame yourself, this is something that is often not talked about in the gut healing world)
I want to share two critical mindset strategies that changed everything for me: after decades of struggling with bloating, heartburn and constipation, not to mention a million food sensitivities, these were the shifts that allowed me to get unstuck and finally feel GOOD again.
Learn to love & accept your body
We can thank diet culture for making this one so hard. Most of us hate our bodies, or at least a part of them, and whether we realize it or not, we are constantly telling ourselves things like "I hate my stomach, I always look 6 months pregnant, no matter what I eat" or "Why can't I just lose this stubborn belly fat, why are you doing this to me, it used to be so easy!" or even, "heartburn again, great, I didn't even eat any trigger foods, why does this always happen??"
We blame our bodies and get upset that we have symptoms, but really, your body is just trying to tell you what it needs!
Sometimes it can be overwhelming and confusing to figure out what exactly your body needs, (especially when you try to find the answers on Google) but THIS is why I believe in empowering everyone with the knowledge to understand not just how to fix their gut, but WHY they have symptoms in the first place. This knowledge sets your mind free, so you can be compassionate and loving with your body, rather than continue getting frustrated with it.
Here's the thing, your brain is powerful, and it is constantly telling your body what to do - it literally programs your cells.
If you are constantly telling yourself negative, hurtful things, or that you are sick and will never feel better, your cells hear that and will respond that way and you will continue to be sick, bloated and react to everything you eat.
BUT the opposite is also true, because your brain is powerful, it can also HEAL you, if you give your body the right messages!
Try this today:
Tune in to your inner self talk:
what are you telling yourself? Would you say that to a friend? How can you shift this inner dialogue?
Instead of judging yourself for having these thoughts, just examine these thoughts with curiosity. "Hmm that's interesting, I wonder where that came from?"
The more you learn about how your body works, and focus on all the amazing things your body does for you every day, the more you can send healing thoughts to your body to fast track your gut healing journey!
BELIEVING you can heal
This one's a tough one, because if you've been struggling with gut issues for years and you feel like you've tried everything you're probably thinking "Holly, how can I believe it's possible when it feels like it's not?"
By understanding WHY nothing is working.
You think you've tried everything, and I know you've done your best to eat clean and take your supplements, but you probably don't realize just how much stress is taking a toll on your body and keeping it stuck in "survival mode".
The unfortunate truth is, no matter how clean you eat, how many probiotics you take, or how much you exercise, if your body is stuck in "survival mode" you simply won't heal, especially if you're constantly telling yourself you're sick and will never feel better, or you're hating on your body.
Now we are all stressed, stress is unavoidable, but all I ask is that you add a few simple practices to your day to help your body better manange stress, and spend a bit less time in "survival mode" and a bit more time in " rest and digest", a calmer state where healing can happen.
Try this today:
set boundaries and learn to say no: as a fellow people pleaser I get it. For years I would worry if I said no or spoke up people would get mad at me and it would impact our relationship. I had to learn to stop giving so many f*cks, because saying no is liberating and if you're nice about it and someone is that upset, then they aren't worth your time anyway!
ask for help: don't try to do everything yourself, you're not weak or needy if you ask for help, it actually makes you stronger because it means you have more time and energy to take care of yourself and actually heal!
schedule in me time - literally put it into your calendar and make it a non-negotiable (even 5 to 15 min!).
try deep breathing or a guided meditation or self hypnosis track. Even 3 to 5 deep breaths or a 5 minute track can help!
listen to your body: what does it need today? Do your best to honour it. Quiet time alone? More water? More sleep?
get your sleep: this one's not always easy, as a fellow insomniac, I've struggled most of my life. But what I know for sure works: daily movement, sun exposure, deep breathing and meditation, a quiet bedtime routine and sleep supplements!
If all of this seems great in theory, but you have no idea where to start or need more guidance and support, I totally get it!
